Hi, neighbor. I'd like to show you something.

I was reminded this morning (see video below) of how much I loved Mr. Rogers as a child.  Sure, I'm dating myself, but I don't care: in the kind and gentle world of Mr. Rogers, your age, your place, your race -- none of that separated any of us. Instead he taught us how to marvel at and appreciate our differences, celebrate them.

Mr. Rogers dwells in my Personal Pantheon, my little mental gallery not of gods, but of admirable people from whom I've learned big lessons, from whom I am learning still.

I wonder if you feel this way, too.

I spent hours and hours as a child keeping company with Mr. Rogers, listening to his gentleness both on television and on records, feeling safe in that quiet space.

I also distinctly remember the day that Mr. Rogers showed us, on the program, that he operated the trolley by some buttons just out of sight.  Since I'd always really thought that part was magic, I was disappointed. I blamed him a little, like he'd tricked me all that time, but later on, days later, felt better. He'd just shown me how it worked.  He let me in, as with so many other things, on how it worked.

What a special person he was.  Watch and remember.
