Country Mouse Monday: Spring, sprung!

welcome, baby lettuce! After months of winter, what a wonder to awaken, like everything around us, to rush out into the morning as soon as it's light to behold what new marvel has unfolded...

And so it is with the first seeds of the season, some sown directly into the soil (sweet peas, carnations, sweet william), some into the starting tray.

Fresh miracles, every single time!

This weekend I walked around, in a sleep-deprived, spring-addled stupor,  watching seedlings break ground, flowers and food coming oh-so-soon, but in the meantime this marvel of burgeoning slender necks reaching for the light.

So inspiring every time.  Heart-stopping, even.

And a good thing, too, because all that inspiration makes for light "work," casting more and more seeds into tiny furrows in the garden, filling pots with dirt and dreams of meals to come.

That's my kind of work, for sure.

It's hard to say if Spring is my favorite time of year.  Honestly, whatever season it is appears to be my favorite. But there's something so exciting about this period -- the buds forming in the apple tree, the Pawlonia preparing to burst into all-over bloom, and everywhere, everywhere garden space waiting for animation, hungry for it.

The weekend are too short, but soon it'll be light out and I'll go traipsing along again, eyeing the ground for signs of new life. I wish I could stay watching all day, every day, but even these morning glimpses are enough, on a work-day, to carry me through, buzzing, with this Spring in my step, completely sprung.
