Country Mouse Monday: bee-licious!

Oh my, so much has happened recently. Well, not happened exactly, as if it just did it all on its own. Allow me to re-phrase.

Oh my, I’ve made so much stuff happen recently!

I know I’ve been super-quiet in this space (last post was June 20!), but only because I’ve been so swept up in other areas, mostly with the launch of Blissbug finally, both on the interwebs and retail. If you don’t know, Blissbug is my bee-zness, the platform for all of my bee-related making and, soon, writing. It’s so much fun I can hardly believe it, that finally, in my dotage, I am getting to create something like this.

And all it took was quitting my stupid job.

That said, let’s be honest: how many gazillionaire-beekeepers do you know? OK, wait, there may be one, the real life Burt behind Burt’s Bees, but yeah, that’s an exception.

I’m still building my bookkeeping business, too, since that’s what mostly pays the bills, and it amuses me no end to be alternating my time between these two Bs, the books and the bees. My standard day now likely includes a block of time indoors at my desk doing other people’s numbers, with breaks to wander around outside in the garden, watch the bees fly, check out how everything’s growing, think about what I can harvest and make for dinner. With plenty of time to make stuff. And time to go to yoga.

I’m free. It’s dreamy.

Sometimes -- oh, my goodness, I can't believe it! -- I even have lunch dates.

I just looked up at the calendar and realized that tomorrow marks 5 months since I became my own boss. Five months. It’s not really that long, and yet it has felt long and full, in that way that summer vacation days used to seem longer and fuller than the school days, remember that? These months have felt just as wide-open, full of sunny possibility. Like time itself has changed for me.

Every single day is a celebration. It’s all work. It’s all weekend. It’s all mine.

At Misfit 2014, print-maker Amos Kennedy said, when speaking about his decision to leave corporate and head out on his own, “I didn’t quit my job. I quit my employment.” Oh, Hell Yes.

When I say, above, I quit my stupid job, what I really mean is that I quit my employment. So now I can do my real job more than ever, maybe fully for the first time ever, starting from what I love, sticking with that, up to my elbows in it, doing it over and over and making it my whole life.

That? THAT's my job. And it's bee-licious.

Come celebrate the launch of Blissbug on Facebook, our new website, or at our exclusive retail location in San Rafael, Burns Florist.
