make TODAY The Day

True story: I was walking with Mr. Burns yesterday at the marsh, early-early. I was, as usual, thinking and training, so a bit in my head. And though it shouldn't have surprised me, it did: suddenly, that great orb of the sun appeared, just about to rise over the distant East Bay hills.

Another beautiful sunrise, another fresh start.

I hesitated, then stopped the dog and turned myself to face the sun, completely dazzled, again, by the sight. First that little glimmer of orange against the pink autum sky, then as I watched, more and more of that star every moment, bigger and bigger, brighter and brighter. And I had this thought.

Let this be the last day I get up feeling hopeless.  Let this be the last day that I’m not making my life exactly how I want it to be, the last day that I'm not doing what I’m meant to do.

A swift tug on the leash from Burns brought me back from my reverie and off we went home. But I didn’t lose the sight of the sunrise, carried that around in me all day, along with that echoed refrain, Start Today, Start Today.

This morning was another early-early walk, and another sunrise, a real show-stopper grabbing me through the trees as we hiked in the hills.

But this morning was different. Because I started.

This morning I kicked off November with a bang, writing 1,700 words toward my National Novel Writing Month goal. And here I am writing a blog post toward my National Blog Posting Month goal. Ticking off boxes, taking step after step toward my goal.

It can be so overwhelming at times, right -- what we have to do to pay the bills, to keep the house. It can be so easy to lose sight of the Why. And get discouraged. What's the point? But every day offers that opportunity to get back to that truth of what you're here for, what you love, what you want.

Every day another sunrise and another chance to do it. For yourself. Because you want to.

Make TODAY The Day.
