life since NaNo

Who knew things would be so dull after the big push, the month-long all-consuming National Novel Writing Month? Yes, I wrote 50,000 words, so glad about that, but also:

I have post-NaNo blues.

And also a lot more time to read.

Looking back at my Goodreads for the year, I see that I finished a book on October 29th, and the next, Divergent, on December 2nd. After basically devouring books steadily all year, for one whole month I didn't complete a single book. In fairness, it's partly because of the amount of time required to write 1,700+ words a day.

But also, it must be said, shhhhh: I am not really enjoying the Booker-Prize winning The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton that I started on November 12th.

Nope. Not enjoying.

A confirmed philistine.

[Truly this is not the first time the Booker Prize committee has selected the short-listed book I enjoyed the least. I'm beginning to wonder if they can only agree on the most ponderous, difficult tome. But that's a whole other topic.]

Thrilling YA fiction aside, it's a bit dull, this life after NaNo. Thank goodness, it is made brighter by more time to devour Divergent, and then Insurgent, the second book in the brilliant series by now TWENTY FOUR YEAR-OLD Veronica Roth.

And thank more goodness that I have some lovely stranger-companions thanks to the Lift app, friends who were part of the NaNo coaching plan on that platform, and are now part of a Write Like It's November group. The daily opportunity to click the big green check-mark so keeps me on track!

NaNo: I miss you!

Meanwhile, I am also working on a plan to gather some needed reinforcements to get back on the 1,800-daily-words horse in January.

If you've ever thought about making a month-long writing commitment and could use some company and cheerleading, tuck this thought away in your mind: I will be unveiling something shortly, a way to kick off 2014 in a dramatic way.

This post seems to pitch about unevenly, running here and there, which is exactly how I've been feeling since December 1st, trying to get my feet back under me, steady. Steady like November.

Coming soon!
